| This
view is a familiar one to many space art fans - the rings of Saturn as seen from
the cloud-tops of the planet. The first painting of Saturn's rings that many of
us will remember was painted by the acknowledged master of astronomical art -
Chesley Bonestell - in the 1940s'. One
version appeared in The Conquest of Space - 1949, followed by another in 1961
for 'The Solar System', and another in 1970. This
is a foreshortened view and employs a very narrow field of vision - resulting
in a compressed 'telephoto' appearance. Hettick's
interpretation of the scene appeared as a cover of The Planetary Report for April
2004. |
